What is Asana?
Description of eight parts of yoga has been given in his yoga granth by Maharshi Pantajali in which asana has kept on third place. First place has been given to the asana while describing asana in the ‘Hathyoga Pradipika’. In the ‘Mandal Brahamopanishad’, it has been described while giving descriptions of asana that such mudra in which a person may sit for a long time is called asana. It has been considered that there are thousand of asana in the yoga granthas, but 84 types of asana has been considered important in these asana. The practice of all the asanas is very beneficial.

According to Maharshi Pantajali, mudra of asana should be such in which a person may sit easily, such types of mudras are called asana. This asana is called ‘Sthira Sukhama Asana’. Asana provides stability, healthiness and simplicity to the body parts, which end mental tension in the last and make the mind calm and stable.
Practitioner or yoga teachers, who practice and study of the yoga granthas, have described that asana and physical exercise, have no similarity. Things are necessary for the practice of exercise whereas any types of means or thing are not necessary in the asana. The practice of asana can be done anywhere and without any special preparation. Only Nature is assistant for the asana as airy place, a small bed sheet for asana and self-confidence. Practice of asana develops the physical health, tolerance strength and vitality power, which are useful to provide long life to the human being.

The asanas have been divided into three parts in yoga granthas-
1. Meditation asana
2. Mental peaceful asana
3. Physical strength asana
1. Meditation asana-
This asana is very important for the practice of meditation. Therefore, the practice of these asanas should be done before meditation.
2. Mental peaceful asana-
This asana is related to the mind and the practice of this asana provides peace to the mind and stops the inconstancy of the mind.
3. Physical strength asana-
The practice of this asana should be done to increase physical strength and to sustain physical healthy.

Hathyoga has great importance in the yoga practice. Besides asanas, the description of the mudras and bandhas also has been described in the ‘Hathyoga Pradipika’. These mudras have very important place in the yoga practice. These mudras have been kept with the asana too and bandhas also have been kept with the asana. The description of three bandhas and many types of mudras have been described in the yoga granthas.

Ten mudras have been considered very important in these mudras. The practice of these mudras is done with asana or other yoga activities. Mudras are very important in the meditation. There are three kinds of bandhs as Jalandhara bandh, Uddiyan bandh and Mool bandh. The method of using bandhas has been described along with the practice of yoga activity. Bandhas have great importance in pranayama and it helps in the awakening of Kundilini Power.

The use and development of the yoga asanas is in continuous form since ancient time. On one hand practice of asana makes the body strong and flexibility originates in the bones on the other hand as well as several diseases disappear. Tiredness ends and nerves get relaxation by the practice of asana. The mind gets peace by asana and it is very good benefit of asana.

Asana condition-
As there are three conditions of the asana. First, the mudra viz. asana condition is made. In the second mudra, that mudra viz previous mudra is stabled or controlled, and in the third condition; the person has to come in his real condition by abandoning the asana. The practice of asanas should be done patiently and slowly. The person should concentrate on the motion of the breathing (inhaling and exhaling).

When a person finishes the practice of any asana, he can stay in that asana for a long time. The asana should be used for systematic use of different muscles by which balanced coordination of the activities of the intestines, mentally and physically could be gotten. After testing by the science, it has been found that physical stability and physical strength of the body are developed by the comfortable mudras for the asana, meditation and trance. Different beneficial changes as physical construction, biological chemical, mental changes etc because of yoga asanas.

This yoga activity is useful in the case of obesity, breathing problems, diabetes, less quantity of cholesterol, excessive quantity of the protein in blood, developed activity of endocrine glands and developed mentality like intelligence quotient (I,Q), working capacity and tiredness. By doing the practice of asanas, there is a good balance between good physical condition and mental consciousness. Therefore, the practice of asanas is necessary to keep the body healthy. A person can end the mental and physically disability by the practice of asana.

When the body of a person is healthy and the mind is happy and stable, a true relation establishes in the body, mind and soul, so all the people, who want to understand full usefulness of the life and get joy of the life, should do the practice of yoga asanas.
